What's the Difference Between Foundation Series and Deep Dive Courses?

The Montana Grown Leadership Academy (MGLA) offers two distinct professional development pathways for local government professionals: Foundation Series courses and Deep Dive courses. While both programs are designed to strengthen leadership capacity and improve organizational effectiveness, they differ in scope, format, and learning objectives.

Foundation Series: Building a Broad Leadership Foundation

Foundation Series courses provide comprehensive leadership and management training across a wide range of topics important to local government professionals. These one-day, in-person courses are designed to help participants develop a well-rounded leadership skillset by exploring multiple concepts and competencies in a single training experience.

The Foundation Series consists of four courses that rotate over a two-year cycle. Each course includes six to seven learning sessions covering topics such as communication, emotional intelligence, workplace culture, accountability, trust-building, critical thinking, employee engagement, ethics, human resources, project management, and local government operations. Participants gain practical tools and strategies that can be applied immediately in their workplaces.

Because the curriculum spans many leadership topics, Foundation Series courses are particularly valuable for new supervisors, emerging leaders, and professionals seeking a broad understanding of effective leadership and management practices.

Deep Dives: Exploring a Single Topic in Greater Depth

Deep Dive courses focus on one leadership topic at a time, allowing participants to develop deeper expertise and stronger application skills in a specific area. Rather than providing a broad overview of multiple subjects, Deep Dives offer an intensive learning experience centered on a single leadership challenge or competency.

Each Deep Dive begins with a full day of in-person instruction, followed by approximately one month of workplace application and a virtual follow-up session. This extended format encourages participants to practice new skills, reflect on their experiences, and receive additional guidance as they implement what they have learned.

Topics vary based on local government needs and participant feedback, with recent offerings focusing on conflict management and Real Colors leadership applications. The emphasis is on helping participants move beyond understanding concepts to successfully applying them in real-world situations.

Course Comparison

While both programs emphasize practical leadership development, the key difference lies in breadth versus depth.

Foundation Series courses provide broad exposure to many leadership topics, making them ideal for building a strong leadership foundation and developing core supervisory skills. Participants leave with a diverse toolkit that can support success across a variety of workplace situations.

Deep Dives, on the other hand, allow participants to concentrate on a specific area of leadership development. The extended learning format provides more opportunities for practice, reflection, and application, helping participants develop advanced skills and confidence in a particular subject.

Which Program Is Right for You?

For individuals who are new to leadership roles or looking to strengthen their overall leadership capabilities, Foundation Series courses offer an excellent starting point. The curriculum provides broad-based training that supports success across many aspects of supervision and organizational leadership.

For those who already have foundational leadership knowledge and want to deepen their expertise in a particular area, Deep Dives provide a more focused and immersive learning experience. The combination of instruction, workplace application, and follow-up support helps participants translate learning into meaningful workplace improvements.

Many local government professionals find value in participating in both programs. Foundation Series courses help build a strong leadership foundation, while Deep Dives provide opportunities to explore high-priority topics in greater depth. Together, these learning pathways support the development of effective, adaptable leaders who can meet the evolving needs of Montana's local governments.
