IIMC and the MSU Local Government Center: Advancing Professional Development for Municipal Clerks

The International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) is a global organization that advances the professional standards of municipal Clerks through education, certification, research, and networking. It offers high‑quality training and administers two internationally recognized credentials: Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) and Master Municipal Clerk (MMC). These programs combine coursework, practical experience, and a professional code of ethics to promote excellence in local government.

The MSU Local Government Center (LGC) delivers this professional education in Montana. As an IIMC‑approved Municipal Clerk Institute, MSU works directly with IIMC to offer the courses and training needed for Clerks to earn CMC and MMC education credits. Through programs such as the Montana Municipal Institute, Athenian Dialogues, and a range of annual, curriculum‑based, and online courses, the LGC provides instruction that meets IIMC standards. These programs help Clerks earn IIMC‑accepted education hours while gaining practical, Montana‑specific knowledge for their daily work.

Together, IIMC and the MSU Local Government Center offer an accessible, professionally recognized education system that strengthens municipal Clerks across Montana. This partnership helps Clerks build the knowledge, skills, and credentials they need to perform effectively and support ethical, well‑informed local governance.
