APT and the MSU Local Government Center: Advancing Professional Development for Municipal Treasurers and Finance Officers
The Association of Public Treasurers of the United States and Canada (APT US&C) is a professional organization that supports treasury and finance officials in local, county, and state/provincial governments across North America. APT works to improve the practice of public finance through treasury management education, specialized training, and opportunities for professional connection. Its mission focuses on providing high‑quality learning experiences, peer networking, and recognized certification programs that strengthen the skills and ethical standards of public treasurers and financial administrators.
A key part of this work is APT’s nationally recognized certifications, including the Certified Public Finance Administrator (CPFA) designation. This credential is awarded to public treasurers who meet rigorous requirements in education, experience, and ethical conduct, creating a clear benchmark for excellence in public treasury and financial management.
In Montana, these opportunities are expanded through the MSU Local Government Center (LGC). The LGC offers a variety of training programs—such as the annual Montana Municipal Institute, curriculum‑based courses, and online learning—that help treasurers and finance officers develop practical skills in cash management, investment practices, financial reporting, and municipal operations. Many of these programs qualify for APT education credit, allowing participants to apply their coursework toward national certification requirements.
Together, APT US&C and the MSU Local Government Center provide a strong professional development pathway for Montana’s municipal treasurers and finance officers. By combining national certification standards with high‑quality, locally delivered training, this partnership helps public finance professionals gain the knowledge, skills, and credentials needed to manage public funds responsibly and support effective local governance across the state.
