What are Deep Dives?

A summary of the Deep Dive courses, a program of MGLA.

Deep Dives are a learning opportunity within the Montana Grown Leadership Academy (MGLA), designed for local government professionals who want to explore a specific leadership topic in greater depth. Unlike traditional one-day trainings, Deep Dives combine intensive instruction with real-world application and follow-up learning, creating a comprehensive professional development experience that extends beyond the classroom.

Each Deep Dive begins with a full day of in-person learning focused on a single, high-impact leadership topic relevant to local government. Participants then spend approximately one month applying new concepts, tools, and strategies in their workplace. The experience concludes with a virtual follow-up session that encourages reflection, accountability, and continued learning through guided discussion and scaffolded instruction. This structure helps participants move beyond understanding concepts to successfully implementing them in their day-to-day leadership roles.

Deep Dives are designed for both experienced supervisors and emerging leaders seeking specialized expertise. Participants gain practical strategies, actionable tools, and deeper insights that can be immediately applied to complex workplace challenges. By blending subject matter expertise with workplace practice, Deep Dives provide targeted and impactful leadership development tailored to the realities of Montana's local governments.

Topics rotate based on participant feedback, emerging needs, and challenges facing local governments across the state. Current offerings include courses such as Dive into Conflict Management, Dive into Real Colors Applications, and Dive into Real Colors Leadership. Future topics may focus on employee development, change leadership, strategic planning, communication, and other areas critical to organizational effectiveness and community service.

Depending on the course, participants may strengthen skills in conflict resolution, communication, employee development, change leadership, strategic planning, and adapting leadership approaches to different personalities and situations. The emphasis is always on practical application, ensuring participants leave with skills they can use immediately to improve team performance, strengthen workplace culture, and better serve their communities.

The benefits of Deep Dives extend beyond individual participants. As local government leaders develop specialized expertise and confidence, organizations are better equipped to address complex challenges, support employee growth, improve service delivery, and build trust within the communities they serve. Through focused, immersive learning experiences, Deep Dives help cultivate the skilled leaders needed to meet the evolving demands of local government across Montana.

Most Deep Dives require a commitment of one full day of in-person learning, a month of workplace application, and a two- to three-hour virtual follow-up session. Registration includes training materials, lunch, and refreshments, making Deep Dives an accessible and practical investment in leadership growth.
