# What are Affirmative Action Plans?

## Affirmative Action Plans: Compliance Requirements for Federal Contractors and Grant Recipients

Affirmative action plans are required for all federal contractors and subcontractors with over 50 employees and contracts of $50,000 or more. Such plans require tracking the recruiting efforts to advance qualified minorities, women, persons with disabilities and covered veterans and typically include training programs as well. Requirements on tracking and filing affirmative action plans can be complex. Most larger organizations hire outside consultants to   
assist with the process. Affirmative action plans can also be required by a court as a remedy for discrimination or as a voluntary remedy for past patterns of discrimination and are often required as part of receiving grant funds.
